HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL IN ARIZONA
Arizona Hazardous Waste: ADEQ and Federal RCRA
Arizona is an authorized RCRA state. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) runs the hazardous waste program and largely adopts the federal rules by reference, which makes Arizona simpler than Washington or California on paper and easier to get wrong in practice, because generators assume simpler means lenient.
What actually trips people up: EPA ID numbers go through ADEQ, not EPA directly, and a generator who has never shipped hazardous waste needs one before the first manifest. We handle that as part of the project. Generator status is quantity-based and counted monthly, so a one-time cleanout can push a Very Small Quantity Generator into a higher category for that month. The episodic generation event provision exists for exactly this, and done right it lets you clear out legacy material once a year without permanently changing your status.
And heat matters. Drums and totes that have sat in an Arizona yard through a summer are a different animal: bulging drums, brittle pails, crystallized oxidizers, pressurized headspace and labels baked off. We assess every container before it moves, overpacking into salvage drums or transferring on site when the original can't ship under DOT.
Waste Profiling and Characterization
Every load starts with a profile. We build it from the SDS or from lab analysis, run field hazard categorization on unknown and unlabeled containers, and sample when field testing can't close the question. The profile is written against the federal waste codes ADEQ enforces, with land disposal restriction notifications attached, so the receiving facility accepts the load as shipped and you are not billed for a re-classification at the gate.
Episodic Cleanouts and Facility Closures
Legacy inventory, discontinued product, off-spec batches and years of accumulated process waste tend to surface when a business moves, sells or changes product lines. We scope the generator-status impact up front, set the episodic event up correctly with ADEQ where it applies, and staff the job to finish in one mobilization instead of several partial visits.
Lab Packs and Laboratory Cleanouts
Schools, universities, clinics and R&D facilities across the Valley hold small containers of chemicals that can't simply go in a drum together. Our chemists segregate by compatibility, keep oxidizers away from corrosives, handle reactives and peroxide-formers separately, and pack everything into DOT-compliant lab packs with a full inventory for the manifest.
Who We Work With in Arizona
Manufacturers and metal finishers, semiconductor and electronics suppliers, aviation and MRO shops, printers and coatings operations, laboratories and campuses, distribution centers, general contractors, and public agencies. Whether you need a single drum removed or a recurring pickup schedule, you get the same profiling, packaging and paperwork, and a signed manifest copy back for your file.
Drum, Tote and Bulk Transportation
We move 5-gallon pails through 55-gallon drums, 275 and 330-gallon totes, and bulk loads by vacuum truck or tanker. Damaged and non-DOT-shippable containers are overpacked into salvage drums or transferred on site before they go on the truck. Every shipment travels on a Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest with land disposal restriction notifications, and signed copies come back for your files.
Universal Waste and Non-Hazardous Waste
Fluorescent lamps, ballasts, batteries, mercury-containing devices and retired electronics are handled under universal waste rules, so they don't count against your hazardous waste totals. Contaminated soil, absorbents, coolants, wash water and non-regulated process solids go to permitted facilities with the same documentation discipline as a hazardous load, which keeps the paper trail complete even when the material isn't regulated.
Field Services
When a project needs more than a pickup, our crews handle job walks and site assessments, emergency response, confined space and tank entries, decontamination and demolition support. One contractor covers the whole scope, from sampling the first unknown container to signing the last manifest, and you deal with one point of contact for the entire job.
Beyond the Phoenix Metro
Pinal County manufacturers and distribution centers, Tucson-area aerospace and mining support operations, and rural facilities from Gila Bend to Kingman are served on scheduled routes or dedicated trips. Mobilization is built into the quote up front, so a job outside the Valley doesn't come with a surprise on the invoice.
Scheduled and On-Call Service
Most Arizona generators fall into one of two patterns: a steady stream that fills a few drums every month, or a backlog that builds up until someone finally calls. For the first, we set a recurring pickup that keeps your accumulation area inside its window and carries profiles forward so repeat streams aren't re-papered every time. For the second, we scope a one-time cleanout, then help you set up a simple routine so the backlog doesn't come back. Either way, you get one contact who knows your site and your waste streams.
Gila Bend Episodic Cleanout
SPECIALTY CHEMICAL MANUFACTURER
When a specialty chemical manufacturer in Gila Bend needed a one-time cleanout, HWD removed eight 275-gallon totes of biocide product and contaminated wash water, several of them damaged, plus two drums of 67% nitric acid and a tote of corrosive water treatment product.
Our crew profiled each waste stream from the SDS, managed the damaged totes, and kept the oxidizing acid segregated from the corrosives for transport. Packaging, manifests, transportation and disposal, handled start to finish as an episodic event for a small quantity generator. The whole job was finished in a single mobilization, and the facility kept its small quantity generator status for the year. Plants with legacy inventory sitting in a yard or warehouse can usually be handled the same way: one site visit to scope it, one crew to pack and ship it, and one set of paperwork at the end.

Tell us what you have and where it is. If you don't know what's in the containers, that's a normal starting point. Useful to include: approximate container count and size, generator status if known, your EPA ID, and whether this is a one-time cleanout or recurring service.
