TEMPE, ARIZONA

HWD serves laboratories, research facilities, technology companies and light manufacturers across Tempe: the university district, the Rio Salado and Broadway corridors, the Loop 101 tech belt and the industrial area south of the 60.

We do not service household hazardous or non-hazardous waste. Businesses, institutions and government facilities only. Tempe residents should use the city's household hazardous waste program.

HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL IN TEMPE, AZ

Laboratory and Research Waste

Tempe's generators are disproportionately laboratories: academic, biotech, materials, analytical, and the R&D arms of tech companies. Lab waste is small-container, chemically diverse, and dangerous to pack wrong. It's a specialty, not a drum pickup. HWD sends a chemist to do the segregation and packing on site, so lab staff can get back to research instead of sorting old bottles.

Lab Packs by Compatibility

Acids, bases, flammables, oxidizers, reactives and toxics each packed separately into UN-rated containers with vermiculite, labeled and manifested for incineration or treatment. Each container is inventoried and logged so the manifest matches what actually left the lab.

Reagent and Inventory Cleanouts

Aged reagents, expired standards, unlabeled bottles, and the shelf nobody has opened since the last principal investigator left. We characterize what the label can't tell us and build the profile from the result, and if your inventory system is current we can pre-sort from the export before we arrive.

Reactives and Peroxide-Formers

Picric acid, ethers past their inspection date, alkali metals, and anything that's crystallized where it shouldn't have. Assessed on site before it's touched, stabilized where appropriate, and shipped as reactive lab pack. If something looks unstable we stop, isolate the area and bring in the right specialist rather than forcing it into a drum.

Analytical Instrumentation

Mercury from old manometers and thermometers, lead and cadmium from shielding and standards, solvent waste from chromatography, and the acid digests that come off ICP and AA work. Old instruments and their standards often sit in storage for years after a lab upgrades, and they can go out on the same pickup as the reagent cleanout.

Biotech and Life Sciences

Biotech startups and research tenants in the Tempe office parks generate solvent waste, spent media, fixatives, stains and small volumes of toxic reagents. We set up a pickup schedule that fits a small lab's budget and keep the paperwork consistent as the company grows from a single bench to a full floor. Biological waste stays with your medical waste vendor; HWD handles the chemical side, including the solvents, fixatives and reagents that can't go in a red bag, so the two programs don't overlap.

TECH AND LIGHT INDUSTRY
Hazardous Waste Disposal

Electronics assembly, prototyping shops, battery and materials R&D, and the light industrial users along the 101: isopropyl and solvent blends, flux and cleaning chemistries, small-volume etchants and plating solutions, lithium battery handling, and e-waste, lamps, ballasts and mercury devices under universal waste rules.

Most labs are Small or Very Small Quantity Generators, and a lab cleanout is the classic event that pushes one over the monthly threshold. Arizona's episodic generation provision exists for exactly this; we scope it before the job so a one-time cleanout doesn't reclassify the facility. Labs on a grant cycle or semester schedule can book cleanouts for the slow weeks, and we bring the chemist, drums and absorbent so your staff only has to unlock the door.

Campuses and office parks also generate a steady flow of universal waste: fluorescent and HID lamps, ballasts, batteries, mercury devices and retired electronics from building maintenance and IT refreshes. These ship under universal waste rules with simpler paperwork and don't count toward your hazardous waste totals.

Getting a Tempe quote: send your chemical inventory or photos of the shelves, flag anything unlabeled, peroxide-forming or crystallized, and tell us how many rooms or labs are involved. We plan the chemist time and packing supplies from that.

We quote, then our crew arrives with the right containers, packs and labels on site, and leaves with the waste and a signed manifest copy for your file. Also serving Phoenix, Chandler, Mesa and Scottsdale, and statewide across Arizona.
